More good news from cluster with rising employees, per capita added value and an anniversary
Hamburg as a centre of aviation generates around EUR 5.18 billion in annual turnover thanks to Airbus, Lufthansa Technik, SMEs as well as temporary employment agencies and engineering offices. The figure corresponds to an increase of 33.4 per cent since 2012 alone. “Leading global expertise in e.g. aircraft cabins ensure that 'a piece of Hamburg’ is aboard more than 100,000 daily flights worldwide,” said Julia Grosser of Hamburg Aviation e.V. Thus it comes as no surprise that Hamburg, the world’s third largest civil aviation centre, is growing firmly, according to a survey carried out by the VDI/VDE Institute for Innovation and Technology (iit) and Hamburg Aviation.
Per capita added value of EUR 126,000
Around 41,200 employees in 300 companies and institutions are involved in aviation across Hamburg. The per capita added value of EUR 126,000 is significantly higher than the overall economic performance of EUR 74,955 per capita throughout the Hamburg Metropolitan Region and although employment grew by 3 per cent from 2012 to 2017. Commenting on the survey, Michael Westhagemann, Senator for Economics, said: “This development is an incentive for us not to rest on our laurels but to work on making Hamburg one of the world’s leading and most innovative aviation locations in future as well.”
Record entries for Crystal Cabin Award 2019
More than 100 entries for the Crystal Cabin Award have been received this year and have set a new record. “The competition for outstanding cabin concepts and products, launched by Hamburg Aviation in 2007, has morphed into a globally renowned and coveted seal of approval,” said Grosser. The entry phase for the other eight categories had already begun. The trophies will be presented during the Aircraft Interiors Expo on March 31, 2020.
Hamburg-based EACP marks 10th anniversary

The European Aerospace Cluster Partnership (EACP), is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Launched in 2009 by the Hamburg Aviation Cluster, EACP has 45 members from 18 countries and is managed from Hamburg. The members are part of the Network Initiative, which focuses on cross-national topics such as education, research and the needs of SMEs. During the recent Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, the world’s largest trade fair for the aerospace industry, Peter Tschentscher, Mayor of Hamburg lauded the cluster’s wide-ranging activities and noted: “For ten years, the European Aerospace Cluster Partnership has been an example of how Europe works together across countries on a single topic. Hamburg has shaped this idea from the very start. We have to bundle our diverse skills in Europe because only together can we be powerful and internationally competitive in a high-tech industry such as aviation.”
