German government to fund north German AI competence centre


"AI Space for intelligent Health Systems" awarded EUR 10 million

The German Ministry of Economics and Energy is putting EUR 10 million towards the AI Space for Intelligent Health Systems” (KI-SIGS) to promote the north German competence centre for artificial intelligence over the next three years. The funds are part of a draft federal budget, which has yet to be passed by the Bundestag. The KI-SIGS aims to bundle and expand competencies for intelligent health systems in a network of universities, clinics and companies.

Precise diagnostics through data

“Together we want to use the enormous potential in the field of AI for a modern health system with improved prevention and care options e.g. through the protected combination of complex data for more precise diagnostics,” said Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality. The competence centre will combine scientific expertise with innovative strength, which will have a major influence on research and the use of AI in health technology beyond northern Germany.

Potential of data sets for self-learning AI technologies

The universities of Hamburg, Lübeck, Kiel and Bremen and German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) initiated the AI Space for Intelligent Health Systems in August. Digitisation is increasing the number of complex data sets with potential for intelligent healthcare systems and adaptive self-learning AI technologies. KI-SIGS bundles nine projects based on this data and focuses on adaptive medical systems, learning robotic assistance systems and smart living home assistants. Intelligent robots as well as and virtual agents for rehabilitation are to be developed at the University of Hamburg and tested with therapists and patients.
