Tchibo launching sustainability drive

8,000 supermarkets put Hamburg-based company's "cardboard house" on show

Tchibo launched Tuesday (July 9, 2019) Tchibo its “Sustainable Living. Every Day” campaign and presented a so-called House of Sustainability made of cardboard in 8,000 stores across Germany. The 24 square metre house features sustainable coffee varieties and ecologically produced clothing as well as household goods. The Hamburg-based company, Tchibo, is aiming to significantly increase the proportion of sustainable products in its stores e.g. recyclable plastic and organic cotton.

Sustainability guidelines

Tchibo has strived to make its products and supply chains more responsible since 2006. Speaking during the presentation, Nanda Bergstein, Director of Corporate Responsibility, said: “Sustainability is the company’s DNA.” Around 86 per cent of the cotton processed by Tchibo comes from sustainably certified sources and 51 different types of coffee are grown sustainably. Tchibo is also targeting a 40 per cent reduction of CO2 emissions in its supply chain by 2020 over 2006.

Recycled recycled become pleated skirts

Each cardboard house offers ecologically valuable products and information on a more lasting way of life. Cloths made of beeswax replace aluminium foil and reusable boxes, for instance, and cleaning brushes can be made from recycled plastic. The houses also feature pleated skirts made from PET bottles as well as various kinds of organically grown coffee. Although space is scarce, many dealers have cleared shelves nearby to present sustainable products, Tchibo said.

Rental model should conserve resources

To save energy and reduce waste, the company has been offering the Tchibo share business model since 2018 under which sustainably-produced baby and children’s clothing made of organic cotton can be rented. Around 90 per cent of the returns can be reused, Tchibo said. Plans are also being laid to expand the range of women’s clothing. Hobby items such as backpacks and insulating mats are also available on loan. The Hamburg-based family business Otto has also jumped on this trend and launched the rental platform Otto Now in late 2016. Mobile phones and drones are among its top rental products in 2019.
